Dating, Dancing, and Riding in Cars
A Scrapbook Archive of Teen Culture in the 1930s
Jane saved many holiday and birthday cards that she received from friends and young men she dated. During the Great Depression few teens had the funds to exchange store-bought gifts with their friends (Palladino). As a result, giving cards, hosting informal gatherings, and cooking meals (see exhibit g.2, Dorothy Dix's Letter Box) were popular, inexpensive ways to show friends that they cared (Palladino).
This Valentine card was given to Jane by Lawrence Spaven ("Spave"), a classmate from ASTC whom Jane casually dated for about one year. See the photo of Jane and Spave below.
